Accessible Handrail Profile

The handrail cross-section for common stairs, fire isolated stairs and ramps are required to comply with AS1428.1-2009.

The handrails must have a diameter between 30mm-50mm with a 50mm clearance to an adjacent wall and must not have any obstructions to the top 270 degree arc. It is highly recommend that builders and designers use 30mm diameter handrails for better grip as the fingers can wrap around the handrail.

The main reason as to why the handrail must not have any obstructions is to ensure the person can slide their hand along the handrail, without having to release the handrail when using the stairs or ramp.
