Lift Button Offset Requirements

Based on AS1428.1-2009, lift buttons are required to have a minimum 500mm clearance to a corner wall or other obstruction to ensure that a person with a mobility aid is able to approach the lift buttons without obstructing the lift opening and press the buttons to call the lift.

Without the 500mm clearance, a person with a disability may bump mobility aid (i.e. wheelchair or walking frame) or scape their arms when approaching the lift buttons, which may cause damage or at worst, an injury.

In scenarios where a lift button cannot be offset 500mm from a corner wall or other obstruction, a performance solution can be prepared to address this issue. This is recommended on a case by case basis and would require that the surrounding walls be of a smooth textured surface (not rough) to prevent injury and limit damage.
